Why Join Us?

There are endless reasons to become a Gettysburg Fire Department volunteer.

  • Rewarding – Feel a sense of pride for helping your community.
  • Education – Learn about every role in the Fire Department and gain experience in firefighting, rescue, and EMS activities.
  • Explore Your Interests – From the latest firefighting technology to our Department’s rich history, there’s something interesting for everyone.
  • Extracurricular – Stay engaged in the community through activities other than sports and school clubs. (Plus, it looks great on college applications!)
  • Build Responsibility – Fosters a sense of responsibility by demonstrating the importance of their role in the community – something that cannot be learned in other extracurricular activities.
  • Accountability – Junior firefighters must maintain passing grades in all subjects to remain active members, helping them stay motivated to perform well in school.

I am a third-generation firefighter. My son, now 16, became a Junior Firefighter at age 14. It’s exciting to run calls with him. He’s decided he wants to explore this as a career path.

– David Blocher, Assistant Fire Chief
